P.S. Humboldt Botanical Gardens, located off Tomkins Hill from Highway 101 is absolutely gorgeous! I almost forgot to mention! You must walk up the trails to the top of the mountain to the Peter Santino's "All Happy Now" earth Sculpture, it is a 100 foot -diameter, earth and grass ziggurate comprising two slowly rising and expanding spiral ramps. A true Labyrinth only one just like it in Europe was mentioned to me by someone anonymously, can not verify this...but it is beautiful. Once there, the view of the Humboldt County Forest and Mountains is just gorgeous too.

  1. I have made the nicest friends networking with members of Humboldt County Garden Clubs. I have enjoyed membership with Sequoia Eureka Garden Club, Rhododendron Society- Eureka Chapter, and soon to add Humboldt Botanical Gardens to my memberships. The Humboldt Botanical Gardens located at the College of the Redwoods hold their HBGF 20th Anniversary September 10, from 2 to 6 pm, ...A Garden Gala Celebration! Humboldt Botanical Gardens Foundation has seen its dream of a world class botanical garden on the North Coast a vision of one of the first founders who has a Moss Family Temperate Woodland Garden dedicated to his vision. Today, his vision has come to fruition. A lovely article in today's Times Standard Newspaper speaking about the HBGF celebrating 20 years! The offer a docent training program twice a year. the foundation is supported by hundreds of volunteers and contributors. this Gala is a fundraising event, and offers the opportunity for all to enjoy the many projects that have come to be completed. Many volunteers and contributors will have the chance see the reward of their dedication and all if welcome. There are 5 completed gardens so far and some temporary gardens that will inspire visitors and motivate them to be a part of the next 20 years of education and growth. I was at last years picnic with the Humboldt Botanical Gardens Group and a dear friend who is member of Eureka Sequoia Garden Club and the Rhododendron Society as well. It is amazing how each season and each year the gardens progress and always shine with the colors, textures, and blooms appropriate for the season. There is a Sun Valley Floral Farms Greenhouse and the foundation is able to open a nursery in 2011 under the direction of HBGF Gardener Terry Kramer who is also the gardening columnist for the Times-Standard. I clip her articles frequently and enjoy them very much. there is a new lawn in front of the greenhouse. Together the Greenhouse, the lawn, the gardens host a events throughout the year with the Humboldt Botanical Gardens, the rolling hills of Humboldt land and the College of the Redwoods all so beautiful to appreciate every time. The Docents are available, however you can enjoy self guided tours on 44.5 acres of the property dedicated to the Humboldt Botanical Gardens.

Directions: Tompkins Hill Road- Exit off U.S. Highway 101 to College of the Redwoods. First left to the College Entrance. For Tours at other times and more information call 707.442.5139
